Public transport operators yet to decide on fare increases

SINGAPORE : Public transport operators in Singapore said they had not decided on any fare increases.

Both SMRT and Comfort Delgro said they were still considering whether or not to raise fares, and would make announcements if they chose to do so.


Observers said fare increases were likely since oil prices had remained quite high in recent weeks.

SMRT Corporation's electricity and diesel costs between last April and December jumped by $6.2 million, or 17 per cent, because of high oil prices.

The deadline for application for fare increases to the Public Transport Council is 1 May 2005.

The council said it had not received any applications as of Saturday. - CNA/de
