SMRT Challenge
Meeting time was 8am at Woodlands MRT but I was late. My father didnt fetch me there so i have to take 966 there instead.
Met up with Dennis and Jun Hong before we registered our team, got our goodie backpack(i regretted bringing a bag with a street directory inside), took our team photo and then... sit down at the holding area and wait.... and wait.... and wait...
I know of people from 3 other teams. The Challenge is divided into 3 groups - Open Blue, Open Red and Student. Rachel from ITE Clementi and my team from SP are in the Student cat. I dont know of anyone in the Open Red. Jack, Zhiping and Hafiz are in one team, David Ziran and Soon Hup in another and Ishak and co. in a third team. All 3 teams are in the Open Blue category.
The flag off started first for Open Blue, followed by Open Red, then Student. Each at 15min intervals to prevent collision. My category got flagged off at 0950hrs. We were strategizing before that. Our key goal is to save as much time as possible by choosing the best route to all 8 stations and also, use the Taxi option where its best possible. This way, we can save hell lots and hopefully emerge victorous at the end of the day. But first, solve all the 8 clues first.
At the flag off, we opened the envolope and we solved 7 out of 8 correctly. here's the clue for my category btw..

SMRT Challenge Student Category: Clues
yeah i blocked the clues so that u can slowly guess. The 8th clue that we didnt get is "I sound like one of the hottest seasons 'fixed' in the year". Our answer was Redhill. With that, we thought we could grab a cab to the eastern most point of the clues. Then again, as we worked out all our solved clues, we found that going to Clue No. 3 is the shortest from where we are at Woodlands.
We reached there within 10min, got to the venue, solved the clue within 2-3min, got a time stamp from the officer and off we went back to the MRT station for the second destination. Our second destination was Clue no. 4. Luckily for my team, we managed to gain a little time (by one train) because we managed to complete the crossword puzzle (that was the task) within 8min. That's the interval for one train btw...
We arrived at our 2nd destination within 20min and got this task at hand..

I drew it and got it settled within 2min, and off we go to our 3rd destination (Clue no 6 on the paper) via taxi. We went out of the station and tried calling SMRT Taxis. However, we eventually got a cab on our own, and used the vouchers that SMRT gave us for the taxi ride.
Got there within 20min. Arrived there and found out the team in front of us (in the queue) was only at its 2nd destination because they took 969 from Yishun to Tampines before taking the train down here. We are at the 3rd destination? lolz..
This was the task..

The challenging part of this task is the operation of the 3G phone, that's all. and the 15 second limit seems a bit tight for us though.. haha..
We are only allowed to take one SMRT Taxi ride during the race, and we had used it. So we took the train down to our 4th destination (Clue no 8), saw David's team in the train as well.
At the queue (again), the team in front is also at their 4th destination. The funny part is that we didnt see this team earlier. So we were thinking.. Is that doubting clue correct? (Clue no 2)
Task at hand there was dirt easy

Done within 20s? 30s? and went down to the platform to wait for the train to Redhill (Clue no 2's answer that we concluded). Took a train to Redhill and realised that the other team did not alight! We found out that our clue was wrong! We solved it on the spot and found out that its Somerset Stn! We eventually alighted at Queenstown, got out of the station and decided to back track.. the illegal way =P
Got to Somerset MRT in a flash and encountered a time consuming task.

We spent 20min at Somerset before taking the train to our 6th destination (Clue no 5).
Task at hand was simple.

But its the queuing that takes up the time. Lucky thing by the time its our turn it was quite simple.
7th Destination was the 10th Mile Junction LRT Station. By any case from our current location it would be faster taking Service 180 there. This is to save time tranferring twice - once at Jurong East, once at Choa Chu Kang and once at Bt Panjang LRT (if you dont alight at Pheonix). We gained some ground by encountering the team that we saw on the train earlier leaving the area. cool! sadly, we didnt gain much ground because our running sucks and we missed the train after our 7th task..

Our 8th destination is Clue no 7. Task was dirt easy.

Similar to the 1st destination, we managed to finish before the next train come. and off we are on our way back to Woodlands!
Time: 4 hours, 23 minutes, 11 seconds.
Position: 10/52
There wasnt any other student team on the same train with us so running or not doesnt make much difference though.. anyway, Good job guys!
With that, and to those lazy to decipher to clues, here are the answers in accordance to our destinations: Yishun Bus Int, Novena, Tenah Merah, City Hall, Somerset, Chinese Garden, 10th Mile Junction, Yew Tee.
Slacked around, have lunch before going back for prize giving and lucky draw. Chatted with my other friends from other teams about the race highs and lows. It was a good experience for all of us.

SMRT Challenge Bus Enthusiasts: Rachel, Hafiz, Zhiping, Jack, me

SMRT Challenge SP: Jun Hong, Dennis, me
There were 5 SP teams that took part, we came in first of the 5. If only we had alliance of sorts.. haha...
It was a tiring day.. but a fruitful one.. Althought i'm in for this, i do hope that i can be in for next year's Challenge if there is one.
Cya there!
